Smart Power Distribution: Overview

By integrating intelligent terminal devices, we can provide a holistic view of the power distribution network, meeting our customers’ needs for security, stability, and high intelligence. We are committed to minimizing energy loss and waste, thereby achieving energy conservation and emission reduction goals.

Distribution networks are under pressure from growing demand, more renewable generation and stricter reliability targets. Traditional networks rely on manual switching and fault patrols, which means long outages and little information about what is happening on each feeder. By adding intelligent switchgear, automation terminals and a central monitoring platform, operators can see loads and alarms in real time, locate faults quickly, restore supply automatically and plan maintenance from actual equipment condition.

Danli designs and manufactures the medium and low voltage equipment and the control systems that make this possible, from a single ring main unit upgrade to a complete industrial-park network.

What We Supply for Distribution Networks

A modern distribution network needs equipment that can switch, protect and report on every feeder. Danli supplies the complete chain, engineered and tested together:

EquipmentRole in the network
Medium voltage switchgear and ring main unitsReceive incoming supplies and switch and protect 10–35 kV feeders
Prefabricated / box-type substationsCombine MV switchgear, transformer and LV distribution in one outdoor unit
Low voltage switchgearDistribute power from the transformer to buildings, factories and loads
Distribution automation terminals (FTU/DTU)Monitor feeder current and voltage, detect faults and allow remote switching
Power monitoring and SCADA softwareGive operators one view of loads, alarms and energy data across the network

How Fault Detection and Self-Healing Work

When a fault occurs on an overhead line or cable, automation terminals at each switching point detect the fault current and report it to the control system. The faulty section is identified, the switches on either side open to isolate it, and healthy sections are re-energised from another source — often in seconds rather than the hours needed for manual patrols. This reduces outage time for customers and helps utilities meet reliability targets such as SAIDI and SAIFI.

Microgrids and Distributed Energy

Solar PV, battery storage and on-site generators are changing how power flows through local networks. Our microgrid solutions combine protection, control and energy management so that these resources can work with the grid or run in island mode during outages. Typical functions include:

  • Automatic switching between grid-connected and island operation
  • Peak shaving and load shifting with battery storage
  • Priority control of critical loads when supply is limited
  • Monitoring of generation, storage and consumption in real time

Typical Applications

  • Utility distribution networks – feeder automation, ring main units and substation upgrades.
  • Industrial parks and campuses – private MV networks with central monitoring.
  • Commercial and public buildings – reliable supplies for hospitals, airports and data centres.
  • Renewable energy sites – collection networks for solar and wind plants.

How We Work With You

Every network is different, so we start with your single-line diagram, load data and reliability targets. Our engineers propose the switchgear configuration, protection scheme and automation architecture, build and test the equipment in our factory, and support installation and commissioning on site. All equipment ships with drawings, test reports and operating manuals.

Key Features of Our Intelligent Switchgear

  • Digital protection relays with overcurrent, earth-fault and directional functions, event recording and remote setting changes.
  • Motorised operating mechanisms so breakers and load switches can be opened and closed from the control room.
  • Online condition monitoring of busbar and cable joint temperatures, partial discharge and breaker operating counts, helping move from time-based to condition-based maintenance.
  • Standard communication protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104 and Modbus TCP for easy integration with utility and plant SCADA.
  • Energy metering on each feeder for load analysis, billing checks and energy-efficiency reporting.

Standards, Testing and Documentation

Medium voltage equipment is designed to the IEC 62271 series, and low voltage assemblies to IEC 61439. Each panel is routine-tested in the factory — power-frequency withstand, main circuit resistance, mechanical operation and secondary wiring checks — before it is shipped. For automation systems we carry out a factory acceptance test of the terminals, communication and SCADA screens, so problems are found in the factory rather than on site.

Every delivery includes a complete documentation package: single-line and wiring diagrams, general arrangement drawings, test reports, protection settings, operation and maintenance manuals and a recommended spare parts list. This makes commissioning faster and gives your maintenance team everything they need for the life of the equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an intelligent distribution network do?

It is a distribution network that uses intelligent switchgear, sensors and communication to monitor loads, detect faults and switch circuits automatically, instead of relying only on manual operation and inspection.

What is the difference between a microgrid and a normal distribution network?

A microgrid has its own generation or storage and control system, so it can disconnect from the main grid and keep supplying critical loads during an outage.

Can existing networks be upgraded?

Yes. Ring main units, automation terminals and monitoring systems can be added in stages to existing networks to improve reliability without replacing everything at once.

Which voltage levels do you cover?

We supply equipment for low voltage distribution and for medium voltage networks typically from 10 kV to 35 kV.
