SOLUTION SERVICES

Oil and Gas Automation: Overview

As the oil and gas industry moves towards higher efficiency, lower carbon emissions, and greater intelligence, it requires a stable and reliable electrical, automation control, and safety production solution. This aims not only to improve refining or extraction efficiency but also to ensure process safety, stability, and reliability, supporting sustainable development. Furthermore, it must fully meet the petrochemical industry’s “prevention + planning” intelligent operation and maintenance needs.

Upstream, midstream and downstream facilities all depend on electrical and control systems that run continuously in harsh, remote and sometimes hazardous locations. Danli supplies the power distribution equipment and the control cabinets that keep pumps, compressors, heaters and process units running safely.

Our scope can start with a single control panel for a wellhead or heater, or cover the complete electrical and control package for a station or processing unit. In every case we work from your specifications, single-line diagrams and I/O lists, select components from the brands your site already uses, and test everything in our factory before shipment. The result is equipment that is easier to install, commission and maintain over a long service life, with clear documentation for operations and maintenance teams.

Power Distribution for Oilfields and Stations

Oilfield loads are spread over large areas and often fed from long overhead lines or local generation. We supply medium voltage switchgear and ring main units, prefabricated substations, low voltage switchboards and motor control centres sized for the high starting currents of pump motors. Variable frequency drives on pumps and compressors reduce starting stress on weak supplies, cut energy use and allow flow to be controlled precisely.

Control, DCS and Instrumentation

Processing plants and large stations need control systems that can handle many loops and keep running when one component fails. Our cabinets are built for PLC or DCS platforms with options for redundant controllers, power supplies and networks. We also build instrumentation marshalling cabinets, remote I/O panels and interface cabinets for safety and fire-and-gas systems supplied by others. Read our comparison of PLC vs DCS to see which approach suits your facility.

Designed for Harsh and Hazardous Environments

  • Hazardous areas – equipment for classified zones uses enclosures and components with the appropriate ATEX or IECEx certification, or is located in safe areas with intrinsically safe barriers on field circuits.
  • Heat and dust – derating, sun shields, filtered ventilation or air conditioning for desert sites.
  • Corrosion – stainless steel enclosures and coated components for coastal and offshore-adjacent locations.
  • Remote operation – telemetry over fibre, radio or cellular links so unmanned sites can be monitored and controlled from a central room.

Safety and Reliability

Unplanned shutdowns in production and processing are expensive and can be dangerous. Our designs focus on selective protection so faults are cleared by the nearest breaker, duty/standby arrangements for critical pumps and compressors, and clear separation between control, safety and power circuits. Factory acceptance tests check every I/O point, interlock and communication link before equipment leaves the factory, reducing commissioning time on remote sites.

For critical services we can also provide redundant power supplies inside control cabinets, dual communication paths to SCADA, and UPS-backed control power so that operators keep visibility and control during supply disturbances. Spare parts lists and recommended stock levels are supplied with every project to shorten repair times at remote locations.

Example: Equipment for a Crude Oil Pump Station

A typical pipeline pump station brings together most of the systems described above. The electrical and control package usually includes:

SystemTypical equipment
Incoming supplyMV switchgear or ring main unit, step-down transformer, metering
Pump drivesMV or LV VFD cabinets for main line pumps, soft starters or DOL starters for auxiliaries
Low voltage distributionMain switchboard, MCC for valves, lube oil pumps, cooling fans and heaters
Station controlPLC cabinet with HMI, pump sequencing, pressure and flow control, valve interlocks

Back-up powerUPS for control systems, generator changeover for essential loads

Energy Efficiency in Production and Transport

Pumps, compressors and fans account for most of the electricity used at oil and gas facilities. Running them at fixed speed and controlling flow with valves wastes a large share of that energy. Variable-speed drives, high-efficiency motors and good power-factor correction can reduce consumption noticeably, especially at stations that run below design flow for much of the year. Online metering of each major feeder shows where energy is going and makes it easier to justify and verify efficiency projects.

Upgrades and Retrofits

Many facilities still run on ageing switchgear, relay panels and obsolete controllers, where spare parts are hard to find and failures cause long outages. We help operators plan staged upgrades: replacing MCCs and switchboards section by section, migrating old PLC programs to current platforms, adding VFDs to existing pumps and connecting remote sites to central SCADA. Careful planning and factory testing keep shutdown time to a minimum, and new equipment can often be installed alongside the old before a short changeover.

Documentation and Quality

Oil and gas projects demand complete, traceable documentation. Every Danli delivery includes approved drawings, bills of materials with component brands and certificates, routine test reports, FAT records, settings lists and operation and maintenance manuals. Our quality systems and certifications are listed on our qualifications page, and we can work to client-specific inspection and test plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What electrical systems does an oilfield need?

Typical oilfield systems include medium voltage power distribution, transformers, low voltage switchboards and MCCs, pump and heater control panels, VFDs for artificial lift and transfer pumps, and remote PLC or RTU panels for monitoring.

Do you build equipment for hazardous areas?

We supply equipment for hazardous-area projects using components and enclosures with the required ATEX or IECEx certification, or locate panels in safe areas with intrinsically safe interfaces, according to the project specification.

Can your control cabinets work with an existing DCS?

Yes. We build marshalling, remote I/O and interface cabinets that connect to the client DCS or SCADA using standard protocols such as Modbus TCP, PROFINET or OPC UA.

Why use VFDs on oil and gas pumps?

VFDs reduce starting current on weak supplies, save energy at part load, allow precise flow and pressure control, and reduce mechanical stress on pumps and pipelines.
